Yes, and yes. Basenjis can be excellent companions to families with respectful children and other pets, especially if raised from puppyhood. Many of our puppies are raised with a rowdy toddler and a cat in the home and learn to respect them at an early age. Keep in mind that Basenjis are very intelligent hounds, and if a child (or any person or animal for that matter!) continuously pesters them, pulls their curly tail, etc. the dog will likely respond in kind. Children who understand that a Basenji sometimes needs his space will have a friend for life.
Safety is always a primary concern when it comes to kids and dogs living together. Basenjis are sight hounds, and they are hardwired to run and chase (squirrels, rabbits, birds, leaves...) if given the opportunity. A front door left open, or backyard gate not latched properly can lead to an early demise of an adventurous Basenji. Teaching children/teens/visitors the importance of promptly and securely closing doors and gates can literally be a life saver.
